Job Title: Editorial Assistant, BMJ Open

Contract: 6 Months Fixed Term

Salary: £32,768 per annum (pro rata)

Location: BMA House, London - UK (Hybrid)

Job Purpose

This is a key role within the BMJ Open team to provide support in the tracking of articles in the peer review workflow to ensure an efficient process from submission to final decision. You will help support a large team of editors and will develop and report on key performance indicators, with a main focus on improving turnaround time and author experience. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Tracking articles from submission to final decision; handling presubmission enquiries, identifying delays and contacting authors and reviewers to ensure timely publication

  • Work closely with the Editorial Coordinator to ensure journal workflows are efficient and tasks are prioritised effectively

  • Provide support for manually intensive tasks as required until technological solutions can be implemented

  • Providing ScholarOne user support to authors, reviewers and editors on our article tracking systems and investigating improvements

  • Assisting in the development and monitoring of performance metrics, and collating the data routinely

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to provide outstanding support when covering the Editorial Coordinator, when required

  • Provide support with the journal social media channels; curate posts to promote published articles and monitor engagement

  • Update website information as required

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

  • Relevant editorial experience in a publishing office environment, ideally STM

  • Excellent written English and communication skills

  • Excellent skill level in G-suite and Microsoft Office suite

  • Experience with ScholarOne (or other publishing tracking systems)

  • Excellent organisational, customer service and reporting skills

  • Time management/prioritisation skills

  • A proactive and creative approach to problem-solving

  • Able to juggle numerous demands from different editors
