Job Purpose

The BMJ is seeking an efficient, confident, and versatile technical editor to join the flagship journal’s publications team for a one year fixed term contract, to cover sabbatical leave. This is a rewarding and varied hybrid-working role, with a focus on The BMJ’s journalism content, alongside editing other types of content.

The role involves editing and preparing news and feature articles for online and print publication, liaising with editors and others in the journalism and production teams over scheduling, and maintaining a quick and efficient turnaround when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Close and rapid editing of articles to house style, checking text and data for accuracy and ensuring readability, with restructuring and rewriting as necessary

  • Formatting text using Microsoft Word and XML editing packages

  • Processing articles from Word through to XML format for online and print publication

  • Editing complex figures and tables and preparing linked multimedia content, such as photos and embedded video

  • Writing headlines, subheadings, and figure and table captions

  • Liaising with reporters and other authors to question and clarify content and ensure completeness of articles, such as adequate referencing

  • Liaising with editorial colleagues, press office, and multimedia and online and print production teams to coordinate publication of articles

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience in copy-editing or subediting published scientific material or biomedical journalism

  • Demonstrable publishing knowledge (preferably in scientific, technical, and medical publishing). You will have worked on at least one scientific or biomedical publication with a daily, weekly, or fortnightly publication schedule

  • Excellent time management skills: be able to work to fast turnaround times and to oversee multiple editing tasks simultaneously under pressure, constantly evaluating priorities

  • Ability to work within a team environment, sharing editing tasks with colleagues where necessary, and to be self-directed, managing own daily and weekly or fortnightly deadlines

  • Familiarity with XML processing is an advantage

  • Familiarity with Google workspaces, documents, and sheets is an advantage
