Job Purpose
BMJ Group, publisher of The BMJ and over 75 other medical journals, is seeking a Product Manager to work within its product team on a range of cross-portfolio products. The role will be focused on The BMJ’s digital product offering, which is undergoing significant transformation to improve reader experience, as well as a range of email and advertising products across the journals portfolio. The BMJ publishes a range of content including original research, education, opinion and journalism, supporting doctors, researchers and healthcare policy-makers across the world.
The post holder will lead the product development process, from identifying opportunities via discovery work, through to delivery, measurement and iteration. The post holder will be responsible for growing existing products, and exploring new opportunities. The immediate objectives for the post holder will be related to preparing The BMJ’s website, bmj.com, to migrate to a new front-end platform, partnering closely with reader experience, platform, editorial and tech colleagues.
Responsibilities
Taking ownership of product development for The BMJ, leading it through a platform migration, aligning with the broader journals platform and reader experience strategies
Developing tools and workflows for the editorial team in order to enhance reader experience
Engage with customers and users to understand their problems, needs and priorities and deliver solutions to meet them
Understanding what’s possible with our technology, working closely with functional teams across the organisation to deliver solutions
Playing a lead role in digital transformation within the editorial team
Operating at both strategic and tactical levels
Improving and growing our subscription, Open Access, and data-driven advertising products
Cross-portfolio responsibility for email alerts, newsletters, and targeted advertising products
Leading cross-functional teams, influencing without direct authority
Skill, Experience & Qualifications
Previous product management experience is essential
Knowledge and experience of STM publishing and/or media business models essential
Experience of working with content/editorial teams strongly desirable
Experience of working with in-house technology teams and outsourced suppliers required
Understanding of technical SEO and GEO desirable
Understanding of targeted advertising products and adtech desirable
Experience of developing personalised user experiences desirable
Outcome-driven
Strong analytical skills, using data to inform product development
Ability to make difficult prioritisation decisions and achieve alignment across The BMJ and other internal teams
An excellent communicator
