Account Manager

Job Overview

We are currently expanding our US sales team and are looking to add an Account Manager, Academic Sales. Reporting to the Academic Senior Sales Manager. In this role, the primary responsibility is to protect and grow revenue for BMJ Journals and Clinical decision-support solutions to academic institutions. This individual will play a pivotal role in driving revenue growth through strategic sales initiatives, maintaining client relationships, and expanding our market presence of the BMJ journals portfolio and the Clinical Decision Support tool, BMJ Best Practice. The position can be located in BMJ’s US Headquarters in Hoboken, NJ or be operated fully remote in the US.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Sales Planning and Implementation: Develop and execute comprehensive sales strategies to achieve revenue targets.

  • Demonstrated expertise in account management, including the ability to cultivate strong client relationships and ensure high renewal rates through proactive engagement and tailored solutions.

  • Generate new business opportunities: Identify target customers (new and existing), establish customer needs, and deliver positioning to differentiate BMJ’s products in the most effective way.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of BMJ’s product portfolio and platforms and confidently position value propositions. 

  • Grow Open Research/Read & Publish revenue by understanding different Open Research options and how they map to customer needs.

  • Sales Forecasting and Reporting: Maintain sales pipeline via Salesforce, analyze data, and generate territory plans to track progress against targets and identify areas for improvement/change.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including marketing, customer success, product and customer support to ensure alignment in achieving sales objectives.

  • Develop a strong understanding of the competitive landscape and BMJ’s competitive differentiation. 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in US/North American higher education/library sales, with a strong track record of exceeding sales targets; publishing experience is preferred.

  • Proven network of contacts within the higher education academic library community.  

  • Deep understanding of the medical publishing landscape, including industry trends, open access, competitors, and emerging technologies.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts effectively to diverse audiences.

  • Strong negotiation and closing skills, proven to drive revenue growth through strategic sales planning and initiatives.

  • Analytical mindset with proficiency in sales forecasting, data analysis, and reporting tools.

  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, passionate about driving success. 

  • Customer-focused mindset with a strong commitment to delivering exceptional service.

  • Collaboration: must be a team-player within the multi-dept team responsible for the commercial success of the products they represent, sharing ownership of account and product performance. 

  • Demonstrable experience of using SalesForce to effectively manage customers and opportunities

  • Willingness to travel up to approximately 25% during non peak seasons and 50% during peak seasons to meet with clients, attend conferences, and industry events. 

  • Must have valid US drivers license
