We are excited to be growing BMJ Group’s UX team and have a new UX Designer position to fill. Come and help us get a wider understanding of user needs to design and develop products that healthcare professionals love. Join us and you’ll make a significant contribution to BMJ Group’s vision of ‘Creating a healthier world’.
The UX Designer will join a growing UX team and work within the BMJ Best Practice product team working with and supporting the Senior UX Designer. The primary focus of this role will be committed to the award-winning app, designing for continuous improvement and discovering new avenues of value and delight. The balance of time will be spent contributing to the BMJ Best Practice web product. BMJ Best Practice is a clinical decision support tool containing expertly written healthcare content, relied upon by tens of thousands of healthcare professionals globally.
We are looking for someone who is adept at solving problems using research findings, experience testing, collaboration and other available data. An understanding of front-end and design concepts will be necessary to create engaging experiences that meet users’ needs and are commercially successful.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Senior UX Designer to conduct UX activities for BMJ Best Practice app and web product
Understand the differences in designing for mobile apps vs viewing a website on a mobile device (e.g. offline mode, handling load time/battery usage, app nav patterns, night mode)
Document design rules around touch/interaction for app development (e.g. recommended pixel spacing for buttons)
Take complex requirements and create conceptual designs and user journeys to solve usability issues and customer problems
Plan and conduct user research and usability testing for gathering insight on user needs and behaviours, both face-to-face and remotely.
Follow, and advocate for, our in-house product development process
Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to identify and understand market/user problems
Ensure products are designed and developed accessibly and inclusively in line with WCAG 2.2 AA standards
Work with developers across both our app and web products, providing advice and checking tickets in Jira to ensure that the build matches the design
Present progress on projects and research findings in a concise and compelling way to large groups, including senior stakeholders
Work closely with our Senior User Researcher and Experimentation Lead on qualitative and quantitative research activities.
Apply if you…
Bring experience with both iOS and Android design patterns, plus knowledge of Ionic and Material UI design frameworks
Design for ‘people-first’ – an expert in responsive design, understanding the opportunities and limitations of various device types including multiple mobile and tablet sizes
Are highly skilled in interaction design; rapidly putting user needs, stakeholder requirements and usability best practice into a justifiable design (sketch, wireframe or prototype) and communicating this to non-UX teams and eliciting feedback from end-users
Understand complex scenarios and can translate them into conceptual designs and user journeys via clickable prototypes to test and iterate with users
Are comfortable working in an agile, remote-first product delivery environment with an offshore dev team. Good communication skills are essential
Can demonstrate significant experience with design/wire-framing/prototyping tools e.g. Figma (Required), InVision, Sketch, Axure
Are familiar with remote usability testing methods and tools
Have experience creating/maintaining/implementing design systems
Having HTML/CSS skills would be a bonus as would A/B and MVT experimentation experience
