Technical Editor, The BMJ

The BMJ is seeking an efficient, organised, and proactive Technical Editor to join the flagship publication’s team. This is a rewarding and varied role, responsible for editing and preparing manuscripts across the department.
The role will involve editing and preparing manuscripts for publication in print and online, coordinating with editorial colleagues about scheduling articles, and liaising with authors and the editorial team to ensure smooth publication of articles in print and online.
Responsibilities
● Close editing of detailed scientific text to house style, checking text and data for accuracy, restructuring, and rewriting as necessary
● Formatting text using xml editing packages (currently eXtyles)
● Handling data-heavy illustrations and tables
● Liaising with academic authors
● Liaising with editorial colleagues, press office, multimedia and online and print production teams to coordinate publication of articles.
● Seeing articles through from Word to XML format for online and print publication
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
● Science degree preferred (biomedical degree ideal), or experience in editing detailed scientific material
● Demonstrable publishing knowledge (preferably in STM publishing). Have worked on at least one scientific publication with a weekly or daily online publication schedule
● Be familiar with in-depth copyediting of academic and clinical articles
● Strong time management skills. Be able to work to fast turnaround times and to oversee several editing tasks simultaneously under pressure
● An ability to work both within a team environment and self-directed, managing daily and weekly deadlines
● Have good organisational and people skills, and be flexible, willing to learn, and self-motivated
● Be fluent in Word
● Familiarity with the eXtyles editing package and Scholar One program would be an advantage, but not required.
● Familiarity with Google Workspaces and Content Management Systems an advantage
