Job Overview

Job Title: Technical Editor

Contract: 12 Months Fixed Term Contract

Salary: £54,711

Location: London, Hybrid

Application Closing Date: Monday 2nd June 2025

BMJ Group seeks an efficient, enthusiastic, and versatile technical editor to work as maternity cover on BMJ Medicine and The BMJ.

BMJ Medicine is an open access journal that was launched in early 2022. Closely aligned with The BMJ’s editorial and production values, the journal publishes multispecialty research as well as in-depth specialist reviews and articles on other topical issues.

The BMJ is a general medical journal—published daily online and fortnightly in print and weekly on the iPad—serving Britain’s doctors and an international readership with both scholarly and journalistic content relevant to the practice of medicine.

You will be part of a team of editors working on both journals.

The role

Your routine will involve editing and preparing manuscripts for publication in print and online, updating scheduling software, and liaising with authors and the editorial team to ensure smooth publication of projects in print and online. Content will mainly involve research and education articles.

Responsibilities

  • Close editing of detailed scientific text to house style, checking text and data for accuracy, restructuring, and rewriting as necessary
  • Formatting text using Kriya and eXtyles editing packages
  • Handling data-heavy illustrations and tables
  • Liaising with academic authors
  • Updating scheduling software (Publishing at Work and Kriyadocs)
  • Seeing articles through from Word to XML format for online and print publication

Skills & Experience

  • Science degree preferred (biomedical degree ideal), or significant experience in editing detailed scientific material
  • Have worked on at least one scientific publication with a weekly or daily online publication schedule
  • Be familiar with in-depth copyediting of research papers (eg, clinical trials, systematic reviews, cohort studies, case-control studies)
  • Be able to work to fast turnaround times and to oversee several editing tasks simultaneously under pressure
  • Be fluent in Word
  • Have good organisational and people skills, and be flexible, willing to learn, and self-motivated
  • Familiarity with the Kriya and eXtyles editing packages and Scholar One program would be an advantage
