Job Overview

The BMJ Technology Assessment Group (BMJ-TAG) is looking for a highly skilled systematic reviewer with experience in health technology assessment (HTA) to lead its clinical team.

BMJ-TAG is one of the Centres of Excellence for HTA, commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to conduct independent scientific research to evaluate the value of health technologies for the NHS. BMJ-TAG consists of two teams – one focused on evidence synthesis of clinical data and the other focused on health economic evaluation. We promote a culture of independent thinking, teamwork, and scientific excellence.

 

Responsibilities

As Clinical Evidence Manager, you will be responsible for managing the clinical team as well as acting as clinical lead for a mixture of short and long projects. You will provide direction, advice, and support to the clinical team on methodological issues arising in the evaluation of the clinical effectiveness of new medicines, surgical implants, and diagnostic tests. 

With regard to short projects, you will review and critique the clinical evidence submitted by companies as part of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) HTA programme and attend NICE committee meetings to answer questions from the committee on your work. For long projects, you will lead the production of independent systematic reviews and analysis of clinical trial data for which you will develop review protocols, design search strategies, study selection, data extraction and analysis, interpretation and communication of findings, and report writing. 

You may also be required to deputise for the Director of HTA, contribute to the development of proposals for funding projects, and help prepare journal articles.

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential requirements are:

  • Master’s degree in health sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, or another relevant discipline 

  • Experienced in systematic review methodology and critical appraisal of studies

  • Experience in performing complex evidence synthesis (for example, network meta-analysis)

  • Experience of NICE HTA

  • Familiarity with clinical trial design and measurement of clinical outcomes

  • Experience in managing a team of researchers

  • An organised and methodological approach to planning and delivering work

  • Strong writing skills with a proven track record of delivering high-quality reports

  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Highly computer literate
