We’re looking for a Solutions Architect who will serve as a crucial link between product and development teams, ensuring technical solutions align with both product needs and BMJ’s technology strategy.
The role involves designing and overseeing the implementation of technical solutions while managing technical risks and identifying innovation opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
- Technical Solution Design & Implementation
- Design and oversee the implementation of technical solutions that meet product requirements.
- Ensure solutions align with BMJ's architectural standards and approved technologies.
- Liaison Between Product & Development Teams
- Act as a bridge between product teams and development teams, translating business needs into technical requirements and explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Risk Management & Strategic Input
- Provide regular feedback on technical risks and opportunities.
- Contribute to strategic decision-making.
- Innovation & Product Enhancement
- Deeply understand product needs and customer requirements to drive innovation.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies for scalability, performance, security, and cost-effectiveness.
- Collaboration & Cross-Team Alignment
- Work with the other Solutions Architect to align product decisions with technology strategy.
- Coordinate with the Platform Solutions Architect to ensure product-level architectural decisions align with overall platform and technology strategy, and to maximise the use of cloud platform capabilities.
- Participate in the Architecture Review Group for alignment with broader organizational goals.
- Development Best Practices
- Guide development teams on software architecture, code quality, and technical debt management.
- Collaborate with product managers and UX designers to enhance the user experience.
- Technical Roadmap & Documentation
- Develop and align technical roadmaps with product and organisational strategy.
- Maintain and share institutional knowledge through documentation.
- Organisational Culture & Leadership
- Actively champion engineering excellence, innovation, and cross-team collaboration.
- Adopt a future-looking perspective, regularly partnering and discussing with product teams to align technical capabilities with long-term product and business strategies.
Skills & Experience
- Technical Expertise:
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Extensive experience (8+ years) in software architecture and development, with a strong background in web technologies and distributed systems.
- Deep understanding of software design patterns, microservices architecture, and API design.
- Skilled in serverless architecture and database management (ie RDBMS, NoSQL)
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks relevant to BMJ's technology stack ie Java, Python, ReactJS framework, XML, JSON
- Strong knowledge of cloud technologies, preferably AWS, and experience with containerization and orchestration technologies.
- Understanding of search engines and knowledge graphs
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
- Problem-Solving & Strategy:
- Ability to solve complex technical challenges and balance short-term needs with long-term goals.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Experience working with remote teams and asynchronous communication.
