Job title: Rights & Licensing Executive

Starting from: January 2025

Contract: 12 months Fixed Term Contract

Salary: £40,726 per annum

Location: London/Hybrid

 

We are looking for a Rights & Licensing Executive to cover maternity leave.

This is an exciting opportunity to expand your knowledge of licensing in the STM publishing sector. Experience and knowledge of journal publishing, particularly licensing, copyright and permissions, as well as a commercial mindset, are desirable. 

The role is key in supporting the Head of Rights, Licensing and Permissions to maximise revenue from third party licensing through the legal and ethical reuse of BMJ content. The role holder acts as a gatekeeper of the BMJ brand through managing reuse of our content.

The job is extremely varied. It will suit someone with a proactive approach who is commercially minded and willing to use their initiative to deal with new challenges.

The role is full time but we are happy to consider applications from those interested in working four days a week.

 

Responsibilities/Key Tasks

Client Care/Relationships

  • Day to day management and liaison with internal and external stakeholders including licensing companies, third party publishers and service providers

  • Provide permissions support and copyright knowledge for authors, commercial and non commercial customers as well as internal staff

  • Management of special permissions agreements

  • Monitor and maintain the approval system for local editions publishers to ensure compliance with the rights granted

  • Schedule and attend internal and external licensing meetings including London and Frankfurt Book Fairs

Administration/Contracts/Reporting/Accounting

  • Manage, update and keep track of licensing contracts

  • Compile reports, track and analyse journal performance across a variety of licensing agreements

  • Monitor payment schedules for licensing companies

Copyright and Infringement Knowledge

  • Assist the Head of Rights, Licensing and Permissions to investigate potential copyright infringement

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in permissions and third party licensing is desirable

  • Knowledge and interest in the publishing industry particularly, Open Access publishing, copyright and Intellectual Property Law

  • Commercial awareness

  • Strong organisation skills and ability to prioritise

  • Ability to manage a varied workload

  • Good communication skills

  • Problem solving with a can do attitude

  • Confidence with IT and Excel

  • Able and willing to learn new skills and use new systems

  • Ideally, education to degree-level or equivalent
