BMJ Digital Health has an exciting opportunity for a part-time Physician Editor to join our talented and friendly team to work on BMJ Best Practice, BMJ’s award-winning online clinical decision support tool for physicians and other healthcare professionals. BMJ Best Practice provides the latest evidence-based information to underpin diagnosis and treatment decisions across more than 1,000 medical conditions and symptom presentations.

As a Physician Editor, you will play a key part in developing a new feature on BMJ Best Practice in the US. You may have experience editing clinical decision support content, or a remit or interest in medical education, and ideally a background in Internal or Emergency Medicine.

Key responsibilities:

  • You will have a key role in a project team tasked with launching a new feature for the US

  • You will work on BMJ Best Practice content, ensuring it is in line with US guidelines and other evidence and meets the needs of clinicians in the US

  • You will liaise with external clinician authors and peer reviewers to ensure appropriate quality assurance of content - specifically recruiting and working with a US panel of experts for this content type

  • You will analyse and assess medical literature and evaluate (sometimes conflicting) medical opinions to inform editorial decisions

  • You will engage with users through feedback as well as usage and other data to inform editorial decisions

Key skills:

  • You will need strong editorial instincts, meticulous attention to detail and a confident approach as well as proven ability to produce practice-changing, evidence-based clinical content to the highest standards and to tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently, editing clinical content and checking it against primary and secondary sources (guidelines, journal articles etc), making judgements on complex clinical and editorial issues.

  • The ability to critically appraise evidence developments and to extract the key take-home messages from complex medical literature.

  • An understanding of the principles of critical appraisal / evidence-based medicine is essential; formal skills and experience in this area would be highly desirable.

  • The confidence and credibility to liaise with external clinical experts, posing questions and seeking answers to highly specific queries to ensure the content is clinically accurate.

  • Exceptional attention to detail.

  • Ability to adapt to new digital systems.

  • Strong editing and writing skills, demonstrating flawless English and clarity of thought.

  • Highly motivated and organised self-starter, able to deliver under pressure to tight deadlines.

Qualifications and experience:

Essential:

  • A medical degree

  • Clinical experience of Internal or Emergency medicine or as a Hospitalist

Highly desirable:

  • Previous experience devising, creating and updating clinically accurate English language information for a reputable scientific publisher

  • A further degree or professional qualification in a relevant field (e.g. clinical medicine, a biomedical science, journalism, science communication)

You will be based in the US and ideally work in clinical practice for the other part of the week. You may be based remotely or at our Hoboken office on a hybrid basis. You will be available for meetings with the UK-based team if based -8 hours GMT. Some travel may be required.
