Freelance Technical Illustrator

Job Title: Freelancer Technical Illustrator 

Contract: Freelance Contract (14 Hours)

Location: Remote

An opportunity has come up to work on the highly prestigious medical journals The BMJ and BMJ Medicine, producing graphs and figures to house specification. Good knowledge of Adobe Illustrator is required, and familiarity with online chart creation tools, especially Flourish, would be an advantage. Work can be conducted remotely but working hours to fit with a UK or European time zone are preferred.

Regular tasks will include:

  • Making charts and graphs for The BMJ and BMJ Medicine, as well as templated visual abstracts and visual summary infographics.

  • Creating interactive charts and graphs using Flourish

  • Making static versions of Flourish charts for PDFs and social media

  • Exporting editable versions of Flourish charts for print

  • Drawing up infographics such as visual summaries and visual abstracts based on sketches or templates

Workload varies as required but is on average around 14 hours a week (rate negotiable).

Must have:

  • A good knowledge of Adobe Illustrator

  • Experience of creating charts such as bar charts line graphs, and scatter plots 

  • Knowledge of manipulating data sheets to create figures. We mostly use Google sheets but Excel, R, or similar would be transferable.

  • Experience of working to a house style

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure, while maintaining accuracy

  • Understanding of commercial print requirements: CMYK colour space vs spot colour, handling transparency, using PDF job options

  • A good knowledge of online chart creation platforms. We use Flourish but experience with e.g. Plotly, Datawrapper, RAW etc. would be transferable. 

  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks

Preferred:

  • An undergraduate design qualification such as a BA in graphics or equivalent

  • Basic HTML / CSS skills for formatting interactive figures

  • Experience with designing infographics

  • Storytelling and visual journalism skills

  • Some familiarity with scientific / health research methods
