The BMJ is looking for a dynamic, efficient, and highly organized individual to join our team as an Editorial Production Assistant. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to work with editors, authors, and reviewers while supporting the submission and peer review process of a leading international journal.
As part of the Publishing Services team, you will be the primary point of contact for queries from authors, reviewers, and editors. You will manage the journal’s inbox and oversee daily tasks within the submission system, working closely with editors to ensure manuscripts are processed efficiently. This role also offers opportunities to develop and improve journal workflows, and contribute to various projects across the wider company.
Responsibilities
Provide exceptional support to prospective and submitting authors, guiding them through the submission process.
Update section and technical editors about article progress, and proactively follow up with authors and peer reviewers as needed.
Support the editors by attending meetings, sending out commissioning emails, organising manuscripts in the submission system, and producing reports.
Liaise with authors and commissioning editors regarding article guidelines, deadlines, conflicts of interest, appeals, Open Access payments for accepted articles, and ad hoc journal policy queries.
Collaborate with colleagues across the wider BMJ journals team on Scholar One system updates, internal alignment, and ongoing process improvements.
Oversee the posting of prepublication history files for published articles on bmj.com.
Administer the journal’s patient and public reviewer remuneration initiative.
Work with BMJ’s transfers team and authors to transfer rejected manuscripts to other suitable BMJ journals.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
A minimum of 1 years’ work experience in a publishing office environment, ideally STM.
Experience using a journal submission system, preferably Scholar One.
- Experience of using Google Workspace would be beneficial, but not essential
- Experience handling a variety of queries from authors and editors, and assisting with the peer review process
