We are recruiting a highly motivated and strategic Content Development Manager to work across our diverse portfolio of 70 specialist medical journals. This role will lead the development and implementation of BMJ’s content development strategy, ensuring the dissemination of high-quality, relevant articles to researchers and clinicians worldwide.
The Content Development Manager will line manage a team of three Content Development Specialists, guiding them to research, develop, and deliver Topic Collections (themed packages of clinical research content) tailored to strategically targeted readership groups. Working closely with Editors, Publishers, and other internal stakeholders, the Content Development Manager will shape content pipelines, optimise operational workflows, and ensure the efficient delivery of BMJ’s content development programme.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of BMJ Group’s content development programme, ensuring efficient delivery of multiple portfolios.
Refine and implement the content development strategy to attract and grow high-quality clinical content across targeted therapeutic fields.
Line manage and develop a team of Content Development Specialists.
Develop and deliver a personal, limited portfolio of Topic Collections to support an increasing number of journals, and support the team to develop their portfolios.
Set and monitor content development targets across multiple therapeutic areas, ensuring the team meets deadlines and quality standards.
Monitor, report, and communicate content development progress to senior leadership, proactively identifying risks and solutions.
Analyse content performance metrics (e.g., launches, submissions, acceptances), and emerging areas of clinical research to inform evidence-based future strategy and drive content innovation
Engage with Editors, Publishers, Marketing, and other internal teams to align content strategy with organisational priorities.
Skills & Experience
A BSc in a scientific, medical, or health field, or equivalent professional experience.
Extensive experience in scholarly publishing, with a strong understanding of open access and the research-to-publication process.
Proven ability to manage and deliver multiple projects to deadline.
Demonstrable experience in attracting themed content to support publication growth.
Proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate a small team, balancing operational delivery with strategic priorities.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing stakeholders at all levels.
Excellent organisation and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple portfolios simultaneously.
Competent with digital and publishing platforms, including Web of Science, online manuscript submission systems, and analytics tools.
